Beginner - Whitewater Kayaking Weekend (2 days)
This two day course will teach you everything you need to know about whitewater kayaking. Students with little to no kayaking experience will learn all the skills necessary to safely navigate whitewater rivers. Successful completion of this course will earn students a Beginner River Kayak Certification from Paddle Canada.
Students will meet at Cooks Falls Campground (directions provided once signed up) at 9 am on day 1. Students will spend the first day learning essential kayaking skills on flatwater. Students will learn wet-exits, partner rescues, forward and backward strokes as well as, directional strokes. These are all skills that will prove valuable when students are introduced to current in the afternoon. The evening will be spent discussing some basic hydrology, river safety and of course the swapping of a few good campfire stories.
The night will be spent camping at Cooks Falls Campground.
On day two, students will have the opportunity to put all their new found skills and confidence to the test in a real whitewater environment on the Whitemouth River. Students will spend the day learning the basics of navigating down this beautiful section of river, including eddy turns, ferries and of course some opportunities to practice those partner rescues and wet exits. Day two will provide students with the opportunity to push themselves out of their comfort zone in a safe environment.
This course is designed to give our students all the necessary skills they will need to whitewater kayak at the beginner level. The experience offers students a taste of the excitement that comes with this sport as well as a taste of the good times that can be had hanging out river side.
Students will be responsible for bringing their own camping equipment, food and all other necessities for their time on land. A list of recommended items to bring will be provided upon sign up.
